GPUs Help Establish New Milestone in Mathematics

GIMPS

Citizen mathematicians are using GPUs to find the highest prime numbers based on specific computing formulas. As it turns out, it is also a good way to stress test GPUs and map progress in computing capabilities over decades.

A project called the Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search (GIMPS) has discovered the highest Mersenne prime number, which is also the first discovered using a GPU.
